United States: Practical Guide to Filing Form 1099 and Staying Compliant with the IRS in 2026

The IRS requires the filing of several mandatory tax forms, including Form 1099, which is used to report payments made to third parties during the 2025 tax year. This form allows the IRS to track income that does not come from a traditional employment relationship, provided certain requirements are met.

What types of payments must be reported on Form 1099?

Reportable payments must meet the following conditions:

  • Payments must have been made to individuals, such as independent contractors, doctors, or lawyers, for services provided within the United States.
  • During 2025, the total amount paid to each individual must be USD 600 or more, considering the sum of all payments made.
  • The service provided must be directly related to business operations.
  • Payments must not have been made by credit card or through platforms such as Venmo, CashApp, or PayPal.

Important deadline:

The deadline to file Form 1099 for the 2025 tax year is January 31, 2026. As this date falls on a non-business day, the filing deadline is extended to February 2, 2026.

Filing on time will help avoid penalties and keep businesses compliant with IRS requirements.
