Algeria: Hague Apostille Introduced for Public Documents
Algeria has joined the Hague Convention of 5 October 1961 Abolishing the Requirement of Legalisation for Foreign Public Documents. As a result, public documents issued in Algeria may now be authenticated with a Hague Apostille when they are intended for use in another State party to the Convention.
The Apostille replaces the traditional consular legalisation process between States that are party to the Convention, simplifying the international use of public documents. However, this system applies only when both countries involved are members of the Hague Convention.
Where documents are intended for use in a country that is not party to the Convention, the relevant legalisation procedure will continue to apply.
Algeria’s accession to the Convention represents a further step toward simplifying international document procedures and facilitates the use of public documents between participating States.
