United States: Temporary Suspension of Immigrant Visas for Citizens of 75 Countries
The U.S. Department of State announced that, effective January 21, 2026, the issuance of immigrant visas for nationals of 75 countries will be temporarily suspended while policies aimed at ensuring that immigrants are financially self-sufficient and do not rely on public benefits are under review.
The measure affects countries across Latin America, Africa, Asia, and Eastern Europe, including Afghanistan, Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, Haiti, Iran, Iraq, Nicaragua, Nigeria, Pakistan, Russia, Somalia, Syria, Uruguay, and Yemen, among others.
Authorities clarified that applications and interviews will continue as scheduled; however, immigrant visas will not be issued during the suspension period. The measure does not affect tourist visas or other nonimmigrant visa categories, nor does it revoke visas that have already been issued.
Additionally, dual nationals who apply using a passport from a country not included in the measure will be exempt from the suspension.
